What does an acupuncturist do?

Acupuncture Christchurch

Acupuncture involves stimulation of specific locations near the surface of the skin, called acupuncture points. Over thousands of years of carefully documented observation, these points have been found to influence the function of certain body organs and tissues. The locations of the individual points are very specific and act as gateways to energy pathways connected to the body’s organs. These pathways are called meridians or channels.

In traditional Chinese medicine, any kind of disharmony in the body or mind is considered to be related to either organ dysfunction or blockage of the flow of energy, called Qi, through the meridians.

Why acupuncture?

Sports accupuncture is just a small part of what I do. Acupuncture may benefit active people, is it a preventative treatment as well as an injury treatment. But I also work with people on issues including:

  • Ear, nose and throat: tinnitus, nerve deafness, Meniere’s disease, eye problems, sinusitis, nose bleed, loss of smell.
  • Gastrointestinal: constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, gastritis, haemorrhoids, hyperacidity, nausea, spastic colon.
  • Cardiovascular: angina, palpitations, cold extremities, high and low blood pressure.
  • Women’s health: period pain, premenstrual syndrome, heavy menstrual bleeding, irregular menstruation, fertility disorders, menopausal syndrome.
  • Pregnancy: morning sickness, foetal malposition, insufficient lactation, pregnancy tune-up, assistance with deliveries.
